"Autumn Chapter" is the debut full length from Rochester power-pop quartet Northern Spies. Indebted to classic pop songwriting and intricate guitar work made famous by bands like The Byrds and the Beatles, but rock 'n' roll enough to call to mind cult favorites like Big Star, the 8 songs on this record are a well honed introduction to the band's excellent musicianship and songwriting. Instead of feeling like a straight copy of early guitar pop and rock, the band takes notes from more recent power pop bands like Weezer, Sloan, Velvet Crush, and EZTV rejuvenating a sound some consider to be uncool or old-fashioned. Tight, well-arranged vocal harmonies sit atop the jangle of twelve string guitar, keyboards and bouncing yet driving bass and drums. In essence a massive pop classic that never feels restricted to stop from sprawling, but continues to maintain a laser-like focus.
"The spritely power-pop jam sprinkles in influences from Wilco to The Grateful Dead as Northern Spies flex their considerable vocal harmony chops. Keyboard swells and intricate, My Morning Jacket-esque guitar weaving build towards a wallop of a key change that takes “Back To Myself Again” home." -- Speak Into My Good Eye
"Northern Spies’ sprawling list of influences knows no bounds. Harnessing the jangly charm of 60’s power pop bands like The Byrds and Donovan, the Spies use harmony to their advantage, sparking a new breed of indie rock that should please nostalgic ears. That’s not to say the new album as a whole is a straight-up time capsule; the modern appointments that pepper the record—a dash of alt-country crunch, surprise guitar leads, etc.—keep that 60’s influence from sounding antiquated." -- buffaBLOG (Album of the Week 8.8.16)
