“Mt. Doom” is a sprawling, 30 musician project organized by songwriter Ben Morey (Howlo, Dumb Angel) and Katie Preston (Pleistocene). Featuring many of Rochester’s finest musicians including members of Attic Abasement (Father/Daughter), Maybird (30th Century), Mikaela Davis (Rounder Records), Green Dreams, Tapehead and more - the record is a representation of a growing scene, orchestrated by a skilled songwriter.
Drawing from 60s pop, folk and country, indie rock and classic rock, “Mt. Doom” is a reflection of the dystopia outside and a search for the utopia inside.
"... a magical sweep of evocative Americana; a dusty landscape of swelling hearts, broken dreams, and a series of beautiful songs." -- GoldFlakePaint
"Too forward-thinking to be strict revivalism and too historically-informed to not be considered nostalgia-inducing..." -- Heartbreaking Bravery
"For an album as cohesive as "Mt. Doom," the songs have disparate influences: the Carter Family inspired "The Hill" and "Smoking In the Sun"; the music of Neil Young informed "Flowers" and "Shade of the Mountain"; "Black Jacket" draws from The Shangri-Las and the production of Phil Spector; even Johann Sebastian Bach's influence can be heard on the title track." -- Rochester City Newspaper
"Instrumentally, Mt. Doom seems like something of a defense mechanism, an illustration of the utopia-like dream world we’d all like to find ourselves vacationing to. But thematically, the album paints a different picture. There is a very poignant awareness in the lyrics, an awareness of our world’s current state of affairs." -- Buffablog (Album of the Week 8.14.17)
