Don't let the term surf rock fool you. This isn't some rehash of the Ventures back catalog, the Huck Fins find more in common with the weirder more spaced out side of surf via bands like The Mermen. Led by the mysterious guitar wizard Ryan Bailey, the band flexes serious chops over the course of the record, feeling like a sort of sunset at a beach ripped from a VHS tape made by some forgotten perfectionist. Despite being a distance from the ocean (does a great lake count?) the band takes the classic California sounds and gives them a little more room to breathe, a little more mood than a lot of surf's more trashy and novelty leaning acts. Bookended by lo-fi sounds of waves crashing on the shore, the record is a contained moment of bliss for both skateboard and surfboard. Cruise with the Huck Fins as they follow their pipe dreams.
"Can a Rochester surf rock band capture the California sound with authenticity and ingenuity? The answer is a resounding "Yes." The Huckleberry Fins' album "Pipe Dreams" is as tight and cohesive as anything you'll hear all year." -- City Newspaper
